Holy Trinity Church in Będzin

Plebańska, Będzin
About Holy Trinity Church in Będzin

A Gothic-Baroque parish church from the 14th century on the castle hill in Będzin, within the area of the former stronghold.

The parish Church of the Holy Trinity stands on the castle hill in Będzin, within the former defensive stronghold, right next to Będzin Castle. It is a brick church with a single nave and one tower, entered in the heritage register.

From Gothic to Baroque

The brick church was built around 1364. It was originally Gothic and acquired Baroque features after an extension. In 1560 it was taken over by the Polish Brethren through the intercession of the Będzin castellan Jan Firlej, and at the end of the 16th century it returned to the Catholics. During the Swedish Deluge it was plundered and burnt, and it was rebuilt in 1660.

In the 18th century the Chapel of Our Lady of Częstochowa was added, funded by the Mieroszewski family of Gzichów. In the 19th century, on the initiative of Father Leopold Dobrzański, the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, a new sacristy and the so-called babiniec (women's vestibule) were added. In 2013-2015 a general renovation was carried out, intended to secure the building against sliding down the hill and to repair the cracked walls.

Interior

The interior is dominated by Baroque furnishings, and the church has three altars. The high altar holds the painting “Holy Trinity” by Michał Stachowicz. On the balustrade of the choir are portraits of Wojciech and Dorota Mieroszewski, which went missing and were recreated in 2011.

Nearby

The castle hill is the oldest part of the town, so a visit to the church is easy to combine with a walk around the walls and moats by the castle.
