About Książnica Beskidzka

The municipal public library in Bielsko-Biała, with a modernist main building from 1973 at ul. Słowackiego 17A.

Książnica Beskidzka is the municipal public library in Bielsko-Biała. Its main seat, a modernist building at ulica Słowackiego 17A, is also an interesting example of 1970s architecture.

History of the library

The institution was created in 1951 by merging the municipal libraries of Bielsko (founded in 1948) and Biała (1947). It also refers to older Polish reading rooms: the Polish Reading Room in Biała (from 1868) and the Polish House in Bielsko (from 1902). The present name was given on 8 June 1999.

The main building

The building stands in the Dolne Przedmieście district, between two 19th-century sports halls. It was designed in 1964 by Helena Siedlecka-Górny and Oskar Górny, and opened on 10 February 1973. It has a simple form with glazing projecting beyond the face of the wall. The ground floor is set aside for a ceremonial space, while the lending library and the main reading room are on the first floor. The interior design was by Tadeusz Bajwoluk. In front of the entrance stands the sculpture “Poczytaj mi mamo” (“Read to Me, Mummy”) by Jan Grabowski, and in the hall on the first floor his stucco bas-relief with Pegasus.
