Lutheran Cemetery in Sosnowiec

Sosnowiec
About Lutheran Cemetery in Sosnowiec

An active Lutheran cemetery with the Dietel family mausoleum and family tombs on Smutna Street.

The Lutheran cemetery in Sosnowiec on Smutna Street is an active necropolis forming part of a multi-denominational cemetery. It is divided into seven sectors and belongs to the Evangelical-Augsburg Parish of St John in Sosnowiec. Its most important structure is the Dietel family mausoleum.

History of the necropolis

The founding of the cemetery is confirmed by documents from the parish archive, including minutes written in Russian. Sources give the year 1894 or 1880, so it is best not to settle on an exact date. Since 1998 the formal owner has been the Lutheran parish.

The mausoleum and graves

In the centre stands the Dietel family mausoleum, now serving as a cemetery chapel, built in 1912. Next to it the family tombs of the Schön, Lamprecht and Meyerhold families have survived. Buried here are, among others, the industrialist Heinrich Dietel (1839-1911), the linguist Jerzy Kram, the physicist Waldemar Zillinger and the singer Helena Sołtykowska. In 2009 a plaque dedicated to Henryk Dietel was unveiled.

Nearby, about 1.2 km away, lies Dietel Park.
