A four-metre sandstone sculpture of Cardinal August Hlond, unveiled in 2016 by the seminary in Katowice.
The monument to Cardinal August Hlond stands in central Katowice, at the junction of Wita Stwosza and H. Jordana streets, next to the building of the Upper Silesian Theological Seminary. It was unveiled on 5 July 2016, on the 153rd anniversary of the cardinal's birth.
The seated figure of the cardinal, with a rosary in his hand, looks towards the Cathedral of Christ the King. The sculpture is 4.3 metres high and weighs 23 tonnes. It was made of fine-grained sandstone from near Barcelona. The sculpture is by Zbigniew Mikielewicz, and the space around the monument was designed by Przemysław Dudziuk, both from Toruń. It was funded by the city of Katowice.
The plinth bears the words: “Whoever works with God lays the foundation for works that will last for centuries, because only by relying on God's law can great works be accomplished”.
