A 2002 obelisk in Złoty Potok recalls the childhood of the tenor Jan Kiepura at the nursery run by Countess Raczyńska.
The marble obelisk in Złoty Potok commemorates the childhood of Jan Kiepura, the world-famous Polish tenor. It stands not far from the palace in the former Raczyński estate and was unveiled in 2002, on the 100th anniversary of the artist's birth.
In 1905 the Kiepura family moved for three years to Janów near Częstochowa. Jan and his brother Władysław attended a nursery there, the equivalent of today's kindergarten, looked after by Countess Raczyńska. Their father Franciszek ran a bakery at that time, until the end of 1908.
The obelisk stands on a stone pedestal. It is engraved with an inscription saying that Jan Kiepura attended the nursery run by Countess Stefania Raczyńska. The monument was funded by residents of Janów municipality and by Bożena Gul of Secemin, a graduate of the secondary school in Złoty Potok.
