A museum in the Haering Villa with the history of Żory and the region and a department of West African cultures.
The Municipal Museum in Żory is housed in the historic Haering Villa on Muzealna Street. It shows the history of the town and the region, and also has a department of non-European cultures from West Africa that is unusual for a town of this size.
The town council passed a resolution to establish the museum in 1996, and the institution was opened on 28 December 2000. The organisers were the Society of Friends of the Town of Żory and the Municipal Cultural Centre.
Until 2014 the museum operated in the cultural centre building. After the renovation of the Haering Villa it moved there and operates there to this day.
The museum has two departments. The Department of History and Culture of the Region collects items on the history of the town, urban crafts and ethnography.
The Department of Non-European Cultures shows objects from West Africa: architectural elements, utilitarian objects and art. Besides the permanent exhibitions there are temporary exhibitions, workshops and lectures.
In the immediate vicinity stand the synagogue (300 m) and the Fire Museum (400 m), and not far away is Cegielnia Park.
