A museum in a German-built air-raid shelter from 1944, showing the part played by people of the Żywiec region in the armed conflicts of the 20th century.
The Museum of Armed Effort of the Żywiec Region (Muzeum Czynu Zbrojnego Żywiecczyzny) is housed in a German-built air-raid shelter from 1944. It opened on 14 May 2011, an idea that came from the “Lech” Club of Polish Arms Enthusiasts, which worked together with the town authorities.
The display was assembled from items drawn from private collections. It shows the part played by people of the Żywiec region in the armed conflicts of the 20th century: the First and Second World Wars, the Polish-Soviet War and the Polish-Czechoslovak War. A good deal of space is given to the German occupation of Żywiec and its surroundings, together with the activity of independence organisations and partisan fighting. One of the rooms also holds a reconstruction of the staff room of a National Defence Battalion officer from the September 1939 campaign.
The exhibition is underground, in a structure built as protection against air raids. The museum stands near the Municipal Museum, so the two places are easy to see on a single walk. Right next to it stands the Co-Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
