A museum of a learned society in a 19th-century building, with French Foreign Legion uniforms, ethnography and sacred art.
The Museum of the Tarnowskie Góry Institute was established on 31 August 1997 and began operating in 1999 as an organisational unit of the learned society Tarnowskie Góry Institute and Museum. It is located at Juliusza Ligonia 7, in the centre of Tarnowskie Góry.
The museum occupies a nineteenth-century, two-storey residential building, which is also the seat of the institute. The permanent exhibition rooms are on the ground floor. The collections include souvenirs from the history of the Polish military in the 19th and 20th centuries, among them unique uniforms of the French Foreign Legion, ethnographic material from Silesia, sacred art, archaeological finds and documents of the region's history. There are also Star Wars figurines and commemorative military pipes. Since 2014 the museum has had regulations agreed with the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
The museum is accompanied by the Little Art Academy (since 1996) and the Nos Gallery (since 2006).
Right next door you will find Gwarków Square and the Museum in Tarnowskie Góry, and outside the town the Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry.
