About New Jewish Cemetery in Cieszyn

A Jewish cemetery opened in 1907, with a funeral house by Jakob Gartner, no longer in use for burials since 1974.

The New Jewish Cemetery in Cieszyn lies on Hażlaska Street and has not been used for burials since 1974. It was established in 1907, when the old cemetery ran out of burial space. It is listed in the heritage register.

History

The Jewish community bought the land in 1898 and obtained the city's consent in 1900. The idea met with local opposition, so the matter went on appeal as far as Vienna. The cemetery was built in 1906 and opened on 25 June 1907. The funeral house was designed by the Viennese architect Jakob Gartner, and the cemetery plan was drawn up by Alojzy Jedek.

In September 1939 the occupying authorities closed the cemetery, and in 1941 they confiscated it. A 1943 plan to turn it into a park was not carried out, and the cemetery survived the war. Today more than 100 gravestones remain on an area of 0.75 ha out of the original 1.14 ha. Those buried here include the vodka producer Moritz Fasal (1841-1919) and Edward Weber (1897-1961), the last chairman of the community.
