Bishop's Palace in Katowice

Henryka Jordana 39, Katowice
About Bishop's Palace in Katowice

Brick building from 1927-1933, seat of the curia of the Archdiocese of Katowice, designed by the creators of the neighbouring cathedral.

The Bishop's Palace at ul. Henryka Jordana 39 is a building from 1927-1933, built as the seat of the bishops of the Diocese of Katowice and its curia. It stands right beside the Cathedral of Christ the King and still belongs to the Archdiocese of Katowice.

Construction and architects

The land for the building was given to the diocese by Claus-Hubert von Tiele-Winckler. The palace was designed by Zygmunt Gawlik and Franciszek Mączyński, the same architects who created the neighbouring cathedral. The building is of brick and is in the heritage register, with an entry dating from 1997.

The building's fortunes

In the days of the Polish People's Republic the state authorities took over the west wing for the health service. The diocese recovered that part in 1986 and set up the Diocesan Museum in it. Today the palace houses the Archdiocesan Curia. The first residence of Bishop Stanisław Adamski from 1932 was, however, a villa on the corner of ul. Francuska and ul. Powstańców, partly a former property of a mining partnership.
