About Parish Church of Saints John and Paul the Martyrs in Katowice

A brick parish church in Katowice-Dąb, built from 1901 in the Neo-Romanesque style to a design by Ludwig Schneider.

The Church of Saints John and Paul the Martyrs stands on Chorzowska Street in the Dąb district of Katowice. It is a brick Neo-Romanesque church from the early 20th century, a parish church entered in the heritage register.

Construction and architecture

Construction of the brick church began in 1901 on the site of an older church. It was designed by the Opole architect Ludwig Schneider in the Neo-Romanesque style with eclectic elements. The building has a single nave with a transept, and inside three altars: the main one in the chancel with a painting of the patron saints and two side ones with paintings of the Holy Family and of Our Lady. The painting of Our Lady and the pulpit come from the previous, wooden church.

The walls were decorated with frescoes by painters from Wrocław. The stained-glass windows were funded by local families, and the clock for the tower was donated by the then head of the municipality. The church was consecrated twice in 1902. A few years later a grotto of Our Lady was built in the porch, erected for the fiftieth anniversary of the apparitions at Lourdes.
