About Załęski Park in Katowice

A park in Załęże on the site of a 1938 Jordan garden, with sports pitches and a swimming pool.

Park Załęski (Załęski Park) is a city park at ul. Gliwicka 212 in the Katowice district of Załęże, established in 2010 on the site of a former Jordan garden (a children's playground garden) from the end of the 1930s. Today it serves mainly families: it has sports pitches, a playground, a water playground and a summer swimming pool.

The Jordan garden

The garden was laid out in 1938 to a design by the architect Kazimierz Wędrowski, on two hectares of wasteland behind the former lodging house of the "Kleofas" mine. It was created as part of emergency public works intended to ease the effects of unemployment. It had two pools and was the largest facility of its kind in the Silesian Voivodeship. The solemn consecration took place on 24 June 1939, and the children performed a re-enactment of the Battle of Grunwald. Together with the garden, a scout hut in the Functionalist style with elements of the ship style was built, consecrated on 1 September 1937. The garden served children and young people until the early 1970s, and then began to decline.

The park today

The name Park Załęski was given by a city council resolution of 2010, and a modernisation was carried out in 2008-2010. There are two pitches (for basketball and for football), a small volleyball court, a playground, a water playground from 2018 and an open-air swimming pool operating in the summer season. In the middle is a flower bed surrounded by a circular path, with benches, and beyond it meadow areas. The northern part is occupied by a kindergarten and the north-eastern part by wooded areas. Picnics, fairs and theatre performances take place here.

Nearby

Nearby lies the Iron Theatre, and a little farther the Silesian Park and the Silesian Zoological Garden.
