Racibórz
About Monument to Joseph von Eichendorff in Racibórz

A bronze monument to the poet Joseph von Eichendorff in the centre of Racibórz, a replica of 1994 after the lost original of 1909.

The monument to Joseph von Eichendorff in Racibórz stands at the junction of ul. Młyńska and ul. Mickiewicza, in front of the Galeria Młyńska shopping centre, on the former Plac Zborowy. It is a replica of 1994, because the original of 1909 was lost in 1945.

The poet and the first monument

Eichendorff was born on 10 March 1788 in Łubowice and died on 26 November 1857 in Nysa. The initiative for the monument was taken by the Racibórz singing society "Liedertafel", on the occasion of its own 75th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the poet's death. The sculptor was Johannes Boese. The unveiling took place on 26 September 1909.

The replica of the 1990s

After the Red Army entered the town in 1945 the monument disappeared. The new version was made by Georg Latton, a sculptor from Krzanowice, and it was unveiled on 4 September 1994. The sculpture itself is 245 cm high, and with its red granite plinth the monument measures 410 cm. The figure is cast in bronze.

Nearby

It is about 600 metres from here to Racibórz Castle, and right next to it stands the Column of the Virgin Mary in Racibórz.
