Monument to Stanisław Moniuszko in Karol Miarka Square, funded by Silesian choral societies, destroyed in the war and recreated in 1959.
The Stanisław Moniuszko Monument stands in Karol Miarka Square in the centre of Katowice. It is a bronze statue of the composer in a frock coat with a cloak thrown over his arm.
The idea came from the composer and conductor Stefan Marian Stoiński, president of the Union of Silesian Choral Societies, and the monument was funded by members of those societies. The design was by the brothers Wincenty and Stefan Chorembalski, and it was executed by Wincenty Chorembalski. It was unveiled on 8 June 1930.
During the Second World War the German occupiers destroyed the monument. The restored one was unveiled on 20 October 1959. The artificial granite plinth has the shape of a positive, a small instrument, and bears the inscription “Moniuszce - śpiewacy śląscy” (To Moniuszko - the Silesian singers). The monument is entered in the Register of Memorial Sites of the Silesian Voivodeship.
