About Rakowski Cemetery in Częstochowa

Active Roman Catholic cemetery from 1910 on the slope of Błeszno hill, with prewar gravestones and collective graves.

The Rakowski Cemetery in Częstochowa, founded in 1910, lies on the slope of Błeszno hill, south of the city centre, in the Wrzosowiak district. The address is Palmowa 22. It is an active Roman Catholic cemetery.

Whose graves are here

Many prewar gravestones and family graves have survived in the cemetery, along with a funeral chapel. There are collective graves from the Second World War and the postwar period: of Home Army soldiers murdered in 1945-1956 by the security apparatus and of labour movement activists killed during the war.

Buried here are, among others, Tomasz Szwejkowski, a steelworks director, and Antoni Zębik, a radio engineer and radio amateur. There is also a symbolic grave of the sports activist Marian Federak.

A guide to the cemetery

In 2010 a biographical guide, “Cmentarz Rakowski 1910-2010”, was published, edited by Roman Sitkowski and Juliusz Sętowski, helpful in finding the graves of notable residents of Częstochowa.
