Town Hall in Szopienice

Wiosny Ludów 24, Katowice
About Town Hall in Szopienice

A brick modernist town hall of the former Szopienice municipality from 1927-1928, entered in the heritage register in 2020.

The town hall in Szopienice is a modernist building at Wiosny Ludów 24, built in 1927-1928 as the seat of the Szopienice municipality. It has four storeys above ground and one below, and it was most probably designed by Tadeusz Michejda. It was entered in the heritage register in 2020.

History

The initiator of the construction and first head of Szopienice was Franciszek Bieniosek. For several months Ludwik Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto, taught in Szopienice, and later one of the nearby streets was named after him. The building served as the town hall until the end of 1959, when Szopienice was incorporated into Katowice. Later it housed, among others, a health centre and a residents' registration office.

The building

The interiors have preserved the original balustrades, staircases and door joinery with room number plates. In front of the building stands a sculpture of the Katowice bebok (a local folk character) “Anton”, commemorating Anton Uthemann.

Practical information

  • The building belongs to the city and serves practical functions, so it is viewed from the outside.
  • Nearby, about 1.2 km away, stands the Walcownia - Zinc Metallurgy Museum.
