Kościuszki - Górnośląska - Piękna, Katowice
About Red Army Soldiers Cemetery in Katowice

Soviet war cemetery in Kościuszko Park in Katowice, opened in 1967.

The Red Army Soldiers Cemetery in Katowice is a Soviet war cemetery in Tadeusz Kościuszko Park, entered in the heritage register. Red Army soldiers killed in Katowice in 1945 are buried there.

Founding of the cemetery

The cemetery was opened in 1967. The soldiers' remains were then moved from the place where the Monument to the Silesian Insurgents now stands to Kościuszko Park. The site was fenced and a monument was placed on it. Until 2017 the fence was decorated with images of the hammer and sickle, which were later replaced with red stars.

The monument in the cemetery

In May 2014 the sculpture of the monument to Soviet soldiers was removed from its plinth on Plac Wolności. After renovation at the Gliwice Technical Equipment Works it was moved to this cemetery. The sources do not give the number of those buried or the author of the cemetery's design.
