The smallest nature reserve in Silesian Voivodeship: a strict forest reserve with acidophilous lowland beech forest and a karst spring in Lipie municipality.
The Bukowa Góra Nature Reserve is the smallest reserve in Silesian Voivodeship: a strict forest reserve in Lipie municipality, in Kłobuck County. It is managed by the Kłobuck Forest District and lies within the Załęczański Landscape Park, as the only strict reserve in it.
It was established on 5 May 1959 to protect a fragment of acidophilous lowland beech forest with an admixture of fir. Its area according to the founding act is 1.06 ha, although the forest district gives a smaller figure, 0.69 ha.
The reserve lies next to the watershed of the Warta and Prosna. It contains the spring area of one of the tributaries of the Sucha Struga: a large spring niche with pulsating springs, which is a karst resurgence. From here the stream flows along a steep and deep valley, widened in places, of a mountain character.
The reserve's most valuable asset is 21 specimens of common beech with trunk girths from 221 to 343 cm, including three windthrown trees. Firs, spruces and pines more than 120 years old also grow here.
73 species of vascular plants have been recorded in the reserve, among them the common hepatica, the lily of the valley and the alder buckthorn. Around the hollows with water grow wood horsetail, water forget-me-not and various ferns. The reserve is so small that it has no refuge for animals; animals come here only to drink.
In 1985 it was planned to enlarge the reserve by about 80-year-old stands of beech, fir, oak and larch. Consent was not obtained, and the natural stands were thinned for forestry, which meant that winds destroyed part of the forests.
Not far away lies the Stawiska Nature Reserve, about 4 km from Bukowa Góra. About 6.4 km further on is the 303 Museum named after Lt Col. pilot Jan Zumbach.
