A forest reserve in Janów municipality of 14.64 ha, protecting a fir and pine forest with trees aged 100-160 years.
The Kaliszak nature reserve protects a fragment of mixed fir and pine forest in Janów municipality, in Częstochowa County. It covers 14.64 ha and lies in the Sieraków forest district, near the village of Apolonka.
The reserve was established on 18 December 1953 under an order of the Minister of Forestry. Its aim is to protect a natural community of mixed fir and pine forest with an admixture of other species. The trees in the reserve are between 100 and 160 years old. Rare tree species include sycamore, common hawthorn and aspen.
The undergrowth contains protected and rare shrubs, including red-berried elder, alder buckthorn and spindle. On the forest floor you will find bilberry, cowberry, wood violet, yellow archangel and lungwort. The description of the reserve lists more than five hundred species of butterflies, including the swallowtail, the scarce swallowtail and the peacock. Also living here are the viviparous lizard, the adder, the song thrush, the buzzard, roe deer, wild boar, red deer and elk, and among bats the barbastelle and Brandt's bat.
About 4 km away stands the Raczyński Palace in Złoty Potok, and not far away in the same village is the Zygmunt Krasiński Regional Museum. Another nearby forest reserve is Bukowa Kępa.
