Oszast Nature Reserve

Soblówka
About Oszast Nature Reserve

A strict forest reserve in the Żywiec Beskids on the border with Slovakia, protecting a fragment of the primeval Carpathian forest.

The Oszast reserve is a forest reserve in the Żywiec Beskids, in the village of Soblówka in Ujsoły municipality, on the border with Slovakia, on the slopes of the peak Oszus. It lies within the Żywiec Landscape Park.

A remnant of the Carpathian primeval forest

The reserve was established in 1971 on 48.82 ha as a partial one, and since 1998 it has been a strict reserve of 46.27 ha. It protects a beech-spruce forest, a fragment of the primeval Carpathian forest, at altitudes from 925 to 1147 m above sea level. Thanks to its inaccessible location, the vegetation has kept its primeval character, and many trees exceed 40 m in height.

Plants and animals

Carpathian beech wood predominates, with an admixture of fir, spruce and sycamore. 122 species of vascular plants have been recorded here, including common spotted orchid, snowdrop and aconite. Among rare animals, the brown bear, lynx, grey wolf, capercaillie and eagle owl live here.
