Eagles' Nests Cycling Trail

Ogrodzieniec
About Eagles' Nests Cycling Trail

A red cycling trail from Kraków to Częstochowa through the Jura and its castles, about 189 km.

The Eagles' Nests Cycling Trail (Rowerowy Szlak Orlich Gniazd) is a red cycling trail about 189 km long, linking Kraków with Częstochowa across the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. Like the walking Trail of the Eagles' Nests, it leads past most of the Jura strongholds known as the Eagles' Nests.

Route

From the Kraków side the trail runs through Olkusz, Rabsztyn, Bydlin and Smoleń. In the Ryczów area it passes the Ryczów Watchtower, and then leads to the ruins of Ogrodzieniec Castle. It then goes through Skarżyce, Morsko Castle, the Podlesice Rocks, Góra Zborów and the Kroczyce Rocks to the castles in Bobolice and Mirów. The final section passes Niegowa, Przewodziszowice, Czatachowa, Ostrężnik, Olsztyn and Góry Towarne, and ends in Częstochowa.

Practical information

  • Waymarking: red, signs of the R-1 type, as well as map boards and direction signs to the sights.
  • The surface varies (asphalt, dirt roads, gravel, sand, stones), and the official description calls the route demanding. Mountain, cross, trekking or gravel bikes are recommended.
  • Easier for families are the sections to the castles in Mirów and Bobolice, mostly closed to car traffic.
  • Access by rail: stations in Krzeszowice, Olkusz and Zawiercie (the last less than 7 km from the route), and both ends in Kraków and Częstochowa.
