Środula Ski Slope

Sosnowiec
About Środula Ski Slope

An artificial ski slope in Środula Park in Sosnowiec with three runs, drag lifts and floodlighting.

The Środula Ski Slope is an artificial slope in Środula Park in Sosnowiec, heaped up on land of former mining spoil heaps. It has three runs, three drag lifts and floodlighting, and from the top you can see almost the whole of Sosnowiec.

Where the slope came from

The slope was built in 2002-2005 (the foundation act was signed on 3 April 2002) on former state farm fields, which were being transformed as part of the regeneration of post-mining land. The material came from the removal of the spoil heap of the former “Sosnowiec” mine. About a million cubic metres of earth were used in the construction, and the highest point reaches almost 319.5 m above sea level. The general contractor was the “Maczki-Bór” sand mine, and the architectural design was prepared by Jurand Jarecki and Marek Gierlotka.

Until 2010 the slope was leased to a private company and operated under the name Dolomity Sportowa Dolina 2. In 2011 it was reopened by the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre in Sosnowiec.

The runs and lifts

There are three runs on the slope: the large one is 450 m long with a height difference of 50 m, the medium one 300 m and 50 m, the small one 150 m and 5 m. They are served by three drag lifts, and the runs are floodlit. Snow is added by snow cannons supplied with water from a specially built pond, and the runs are levelled by a snow groomer.

On site there are a ski and snowboard rental, a service shop, a ski and snowboard school and a bar. The school uses the so-called Górka Środulska, as the slope's website describes it. The slope is also a viewpoint, since it takes in almost the whole area of the city.

What is nearby

From Środula it is close to Sielec Castle and to the Museum in Sosnowiec. Dietel Park is also nearby.
