St Anthony's Church in Dąbrowa Górnicza-Gołonóg

St Anthony's Church in Dąbrowa Górnicza-Gołonóg is a Baroque church on a limestone hill (Górka) at 335 m above sea level. It was built in 1675-1678 and is today the Shrine of St Anthony of Padua, run by the Conventual Franciscans. The church is entered in the heritage register.

History

The church was founded by the Bishop of Kraków, Andrzej Trzebicki, who endowed it in 1675 and consecrated it three years later. It originally had a single nave with a wooden tower and served as the parish church. In 1753 Bishop Andrzej Załuski funded a brick tower on a square plan changing into an octagon, with a Baroque spire and lantern, today covered with copper sheet. In 1850 the chancel was extended, and in 1889-1892 side aisles with the chapels of St Anthony and St Barbara, a treasury and a sacristy were added, giving the church a basilican layout. In 1896 the polychrome painting was done by the Kraków painter Piotr Niziński. Since 1951 the parish has been run by the Conventual Franciscans, and after a thorough renovation the church was reconsecrated in June 2006.

Architecture and surroundings

The outer walls are decorated with Tuscan pilasters. The side aisles have cross vaults, the chancel a barrel vault with two lunettes, and the nave a wooden ceiling and roof frame. The roof is covered with copper sheet, and above it stands a Baroque ridge turret. The churchyard is surrounded by a defensive wall of limestone, and covered steps of almost a hundred treads lead to the top. A cemetery extends to the east, and the fence and surroundings were entered in the heritage register in 2022.
