Powstańców Śląskich 95, Sadów
About St Joseph's Church in Sadów

A 14th-century Gothic church with Baroque altars, crypts and a free-standing bell tower on the Wooden Architecture Route.

St Joseph's Church in Sadów is a Gothic church from the 14th century, Baroquised in the 17th century and listed in the heritage register. It was originally dedicated to All Saints; on the wall of the porch is the date 1331, when according to tradition it was consecrated.

History of the church

The church was probably built with the involvement of the Cistercians, possibly on the site of an earlier Romanesque building. Protestants took it over and devastated it, and Catholics regained it in 1671. In the 17th century it was extended, and the owners of Sadów, the Wierbski family, founded the chapel of St Hedwig. During conservation work in 2020-2021 Gothic frescoes depicting saints were restored; their existence was unknown until December 2018.

Interior and bell tower

The Baroque high altar dates from the second half of the 17th century, and there are two side altars from the 18th century and a Baroque pulpit. Under the church are three crypts, where the Wierbski and Ziemięcki families, among others, were buried. In the cemetery stands a free-standing bell tower with a stone lower storey and a wooden upper storey, with a bulbous helmet; it belongs to the Wooden Architecture Route.
