St Lawrence's Church in Bobrowniki

Sienkiewicza 244, Bobrowniki
About St Lawrence's Church in Bobrowniki

A wooden church with two towers, of disputed dating, with a Baroque altar moved from Bytom, on the wooden architecture trail.

St Lawrence's Church in Bobrowniki is a wooden church with two towers in the façade, a former parish church. It is entered in the heritage register and is on the wooden architecture trail of the Silesian Voivodeship. The Upper Silesian Mining History Trail passes nearby.

The age of the church: inscription and research

On the beam of the chancel arch wall there is an inscription: built 1669, extended 1889, restored 1953. The heritage register gives the year 1669. Dendrochronological research from 2009 did not confirm these dates. Its results show that the present chancel and sacristy were built in 1856-1857, using beams from 1522 and 1523, possibly from an earlier church. The nave and the two towers were added in 1889. During the renovation in 2009 a letter in a bottle from 1946 was found in the tower, describing the condition of the church after the war and the repairs carried out at that time.

Construction and interior

The church is oriented, wooden, of log construction, clad in boards and set on a masonry foundation. The nave has a plan close to a square, the narrower chancel is closed on three sides, and a rectangular sacristy was added on the north. The roofs are shingled, a small turret for the sanctus bell rises above the chancel, and in the façade two symmetrical towers end in tall, pyramidal spires, with a triangular gable running between them.

Inside there are flat ceilings. The Baroque high altar from the 17th century depicts St Lawrence and was moved in 1880 from the demolished St Margaret's Church in Bytom. The side altars from the 18th century depict St Barbara and St Stanislaus Kostka, to which are added a pulpit from the 18th century and an organ from the second half of the 19th century, built by Paul Berschdorf of Nysa.
