A bronze sculpture in Bytom from 2004, showing Bytom's good spirit from the legend.
Świetlik is a bronze sculpture standing at Dworcowa 1 in Bytom, in the city centre. It was unveiled in September 2004. The author is Bogumił Burzyński, and the casting was done by Karol Badyna. The figure is about 1.8 m high and weighs about 300 kg. It was funded by the owners of the Plejada gallery in Bytom.
The sculpture commemorates Bytom's “good spirit”. According to local legend, it safely escorted home a widow and her daughter returning from a village wedding. The spirit wore a black frock coat and a top hat, and lit the way with a glowing cigar. The tale was recorded by Bernard Szech in the book “Srebrne miasto, czyli bytomskie legendy i podania” (The Silver City, or Bytom Legends and Tales). According to city tradition, rubbing the cigar brings luck.
