About Synagogue in Żory

A former synagogue on Kościuszki Street in Żory, built in the years 1830-1835 and converted into a cinema after the war.

The synagogue in Żory stands at Tadeusza Kościuszki 3. It was built in the years 1830-1835 on the site of an older synagogue, and over the following decades the building changed its function many times.

The fate of the building

During the Second World War the Germans completely devastated the synagogue. After the war the ruined building was converted into the Znicz cinema. In the 1980s it fell empty, and at the beginning of the 1990s the cinema resumed operation under the name Vega, later changed to "Na Starówce". In October 2007 a thorough renovation and rebuilding of the former synagogue began.

Where to look for traces of Żory's Jewish history

Nearby lies the Jewish cemetery in Żory, about 1.2 km from the synagogue. A few hundred metres from the building is the Municipal Museum in Żory, and next to it the Kraków Gate.
