Brick Neo-Gothic water tower 50 metres high on ulica Sobieskiego in Gliwice, taken out of use in 1985.
The water tower on ulica Sobieskiego in Gliwice is a brick, Neo-Gothic structure 50 metres high and 26 metres in diameter. It stands on a hill, which allowed it to supply water to the southern districts of the city.
The heritage register gives the year 1918, but conservation research points rather to 1905-1908. The designer was Wilhelm Adalbert Otto Kranz. The Intze-type tank was made of riveted steel plates. A major renovation of the walls, cornices and roof truss was carried out in 1955-1958, and the tank was renovated in 1974.
The tower was taken out of service in 1985. In 2004 it was sold to a private company, and later it changed owners. In 2008 a fire damaged the roof. The structure is listed in the heritage register.
The centre is not far away: a few hundred metres from the tower stand the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul and the Church of All Saints.
