About Workers' Colony of the Wujek Mine in Katowice

A workers' estate of the Wujek Mine designed by Bruno Taut and built in 1918-1920 on Przekopowa and Przodowników streets.

The workers' colony of the "Wujek" mine is an estate of single-family houses in the north-eastern part of the Katowice district of Załęska Hałda-Brynów. It was designed in 1915 by the German architect Bruno Taut and built in 1918-1920.

What the estate looks like

The colony consists of 36 houses set out in two rows, containing 72 flats in total. The single-storey terraced houses are divided into four segments, with tiled gable roofs, attics, gardens and outbuildings. The buildings used to differ in their dormers and the colours of the joinery, which gave the streets a varied look.

The workers' colony, the town colony and the clerical colony

Three separate colonies were built at the "Wujek" mine, and this one is none of the others. The workers' colony stands in Załęska Hałda, while the town colony of the Wujek mine in Śródmieście is a separate estate of multi-storey buildings, also designed by Taut. It should also not be confused with the Colony of the Twelve Apostles, a separate estate from the 19th century.

Protection

The estate was entered in the heritage register on 30 October 2023 under number A/1284/23.
