About Workers' Housing Estate of the Dębieńsko Coal Mine

A company housing estate of 84 brick houses of the Dębieńsko mine, from 1898-1916, on the Industrial Monuments Route.

The estate of the Dębieńsko mine in Czerwionka is a complex of 84 red-brick houses on about 15 hectares, between Szkolna, Wolności, Słowackiego, Hallera, Kombatantów and Mickiewicza streets. It was built for the mine's employees in stages in 1898-1916. It lies on the Silesian Industrial Monuments Route.

Layout of the estate

The houses are detached, of one or two storeys, set parallel to the streets. One house contained from four to eight flats. Workers' flats measured from 40 to 70 m², and the officials' flats were larger. The entrances led from the back or the side, and the toilets stood in outbuildings, in which small animals were also kept. The houses have attics, cellars and roofs of ceramic tile, and the façades are decorated with sections of glazed white brick and half-timbering.

The 80 buildings come in 40 types, so the estate strongly varies forms and details. Larger and richer buildings close off the cross streets. The complex also included allotment gardens of about 250 m² each (6.7 hectares in total, almost half of the area), a laundry and a bakery (today the Municipal Cultural Centre), a school on Szkolna Street and a nursery at Wolności 11, today a kindergarten.

Greenery

On Słowackiego Street grows a double-row avenue of lime trees, on Hallera and Mickiewicza streets avenues of trimmed acacias, on Wolności Street rowan trees, and Szkolna Street was planted with lime trees, horse chestnuts and beeches. The layout is preserved in good condition, and since the early 21st century the estate has been revitalised and promoted as a regional attraction. It was entered in the heritage register in 1995.

Nearby

In Czerwionka-Leszczyny stands also the palace in Leszczyny.
