A stone shaft top from 1824 in Tarnowskie Góry, where a steam engine drained the construction of the Deep Fryderyk Adit.
Adit Machine Shaft No. 22, known as “Karlik”, is the remains of a shaft from 1824 linked to the construction of the Deep “Fryderyk” Adit in Tarnowskie Góry. It stands on Wincentego Witosa Street and is listed in the heritage register.
A 24-inch steam engine was installed on the shaft, which pumped water while the adit was being driven. The shaft was sunk not on the axis of the adit but about four metres away from it. The Deep “Fryderyk” Adit, built in 1821-1834, is the longest, at seventeen kilometres, and the deepest-lying adit in the history of Tarnowskie Góry mining.
The shaft-top building has partly survived. It was built of limestone. The site is one of a dozen or so elements of the system of shafts and adits of the Tarnowskie Góry mining complex, alongside, among others, the “Maszynowy” shaft from 1822 and the “Sylwester” shaft from 1830, today one of the entrances to the Black Trout Adit.
