The gallery of the Ateneum Silesian Puppet and Actor Theatre in a historic tenement house at ul. 3 Maja 25 in Katowice, opened in 2007, with set designs and puppets.
The Ateneum Gallery is the Katowice gallery of the “Ateneum” Silesian Puppet and Actor Theatre, opened in 2007. It is housed in a historic tenement house at 3 Maja 25 in the city centre and shows the work of theatre people.
In the rehearsal room and on the mezzanine, set designs, puppets and photographs are presented. Beside the gallery are a theatre archive and a store of puppets and set elements. Above the mezzanine are a laundry and drying room for costumes, so this place combines an exhibition with the backstage work of the theatre.
The corner tenement house on 3 Maja street, at the corner of Słowackiego street, was built around 1870 and rebuilt around 1898 and in 1925. It has five storeys above ground and features of Modernism. Between the wars it housed, among other things, a restaurant and the “Union” cinema, which continued after the war under the name “Młoda Gwiazda” (“Young Star”) and was closed down in the 1960s. The gallery, opened in 2007, took over the restored rooms of the building. The tenement house is entered in the municipal register of monuments of Katowice.
In the neighbourhood is the Rialto Cinema-Theatre, and not far away stands the Stanisław Wyspiański Silesian Theatre.
