Bory Peat Bog

Sosnowiec
About Bory Peat Bog

A Natura 2000 area in Sosnowiec's Maczki district protecting transitional mires and a site of the Loesel's twayblade.

The Bory Peat Bog is a natural area in the southern part of Sosnowiec, in the Maczki district, south of the Bór estate. It is covered by the Natura 2000 area Dolina Białej Przemszy (the White Przemsza Valley), which protects fens and transitional mires together with rare plants.

What this place is

The area lies in a depression with a small watercourse fed by seepage water, and is entirely covered by mixed forest. It is east of ul. Maczkowska and south of ul. Czerpakowa. At its edges there are fragments of reed bed and scrub vegetation, and the whole is surrounded by managed forests of varying moisture.

Plants

Many endangered species grow here, above all the common twayblade, orchids, including the red and broad-leaved helleborines, and carnivorous plants, the round-leaved and great sundews and the butterwort. A particularly valuable species is Loesel's twayblade, whose site lies close to the southern limit of its range in Europe. It is because of this species that the area was placed under protection. The area has been assessed as one of the most valuable for nature in the Upper Silesian conurbation.
