Boulder Monument in Chropaczów

About Boulder Monument in Chropaczów

A commemorative stone honouring the Silesian Uprisings in Chropaczów, unveiled in 1960.

The Boulder Monument in Chropaczów is a commemorative stone honouring the Silesian Uprisings. It stands in Świętochłowice-Chropaczów on Łagiewnicka Street, on the site of the former Silesian Insurgent monument. It is a glacial erratic boulder, and its history is longer than that of the monument itself.

Where the stone came from

The boulder was probably dug up during the construction of the Guidotto Ironworks in Chropaczów. The ground under the works kept subsiding, so very deep foundations were decided on, and the stone was brought up then. In the summer of 1938 it was hauled along Kościelna Street on a platform with piles placed under it, pulled by two Lanz Bulldog tractors.

The fate of the monument

The stone was left in a small square at Łagiewnicka 56. War was approaching, the residents spent the money they had collected on equipping the army, and there were no funds left to finish the monument. In 1940 the German authorities tried to break the stone up, and when that failed they took it to a Jordan garden. In 1959 it was dragged by bulldozer to its present site, and on 1 May 1960 the monument was ceremonially unveiled.
