About Captain Franciszek Stal Park in Racibórz

Municipal park in Racibórz on the site of a palace destroyed in 1945, with four monumental sycamores and old bladdernuts.

Captain Franciszek Stal Park in Racibórz lies between ulica Głowackiego, ulica Kolejowa and ulica Sejmowa, near the Drzymały estate. It was formerly marshy ground with an alluvial forest on the Oder, and today it is a municipal park with old trees.

History of the site

In 1856 the land was bought by the Upper Silesian Ducal Land Society Opole-Racibórz, which built a palace here within three years. Later it housed a labour office. The palace was burned in 1945 by Red Army soldiers, and the ruins were pulled down in the 1960s.

The trees and the patron

In 1992 four sycamore maples were declared natural monuments. The largest is about 240 years old with a girth of 730 cm, and the other three are about 200, 120 and 120 years old (574, 437 and 420 cm in girth). Nine European bladdernuts about 200 years old also grow here, among the largest city specimens in Poland. The park has borne the name of Captain Franciszek Stal, a soldier of the Home Army and holder of the Silver Cross of the Virtuti Militari order (died 2006), since 2007.

Nearby lies the Town of Roth Park in Racibórz.
