About Cave on Kamień

A horizontal cave in Częstochowa beneath the Church of Divine Providence, a former section of the underground course of the Warta.

The Cave on Kamień (Jaskinia na Kamieniu), also known as the Cave in Kamień or the Cave in Aniołów, lies in Częstochowa, beneath the Church of Divine Providence in Aniołów, at the junction of Warszawska Street and Aleja Wojska Polskiego. It is one of the caves of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.

How it is built

It is a horizontal cave made up of low passages. It is a former section of the underground course of the Warta, so it is sometimes partly flooded when the river level rises. It is usually muddy. The openings lie at the level of the valley floor, and the floor of the passages is covered with rock debris and silt. The cave has not been fully explored.

History and legend

The oldest information about the cave dates from 1937. It was inventoried in 1976. According to local legends, robbers who had a hideout here in the 18th century hid treasure in it.

Practical information

  • The cave is not open to visitors, and its low, muddy and floodable passages are not a walking route. Before any entry you must check who manages it and on what terms.
  • From the outside you can see Kamień hill with the Church of Divine Providence.
