A Neo-Gothic chapel in Szombierki, built in thanks for deliverance from a cholera epidemic and consecrated in 1863.
The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Joseph stands in Szombierki, Bytom, on Zabrzańska street. It is a free-standing, brick and plastered single-nave chapel with a small bell turret, entered in the register of immovable monuments of the Silesian Voivodeship.
The chapel was built in thanks for deliverance from a raging cholera epidemic. The land for the building was donated to the Bytom parish by August Cygan, who with Szymon Flatzek was a co-initiator of the undertaking. The design and supervision were entrusted to the master mason Jan Kowolik of Bytom. It was consecrated on 25 October 1863. Over its existence it has been renovated three times, most recently in 1991.
The interior is covered by a cross vault, and the whole is kept in the Neo-Gothic style. There is a gallery with an organ and a small sacristy. The altar of polychrome wood is decorated with a copy of the painting of Our Lady of Bytom; the original hung in the chapel until 1974 and is today kept in the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The author of the altar is not known.
