About Chatka pod Potrójną

A student mountain hut in a highlander cottage from 1911 in the Little Beskids, open all year.

Chatka pod Potrójną is a student mountain hut in the Little Beskids, in an old highlander house from 1911. It lies within the village of Kocierz Rychwałdzki, in Łękawica municipality in Żywiec County, between the Zakocierska Pass and the Beskid summit. The hut is privately owned and open all year.

What the hut looks like

The building is a wooden highlander cottage, adapted as accommodation. In 1974 it was bought by the Academy of Economics in Katowice, and today it is privately owned. On the ground floor there are a communal kitchen in which you can prepare your own meal, and a room with a fireplace and a piano. Upstairs are the rooms, and beside it stands a second, smaller building called Stodółka (the little barn).

The hut has about 30 beds and 15 more in the additional building. The bathroom is modest, and by the hut there are a shelter and a covered place for a campfire. A little higher up, by the yellow trail to the Zakocierska Pass, is the rock Zbójeckie Okno (the Robbers' Window).

How to get there

The hut's website indicates several ways of getting there. The yellow trail leads from the hut to the Zakocierska Pass. The Little Beskids Trail runs through Potrójna (847 m), the Zakocierska Pass and Beskid, towards Leskowiec and the PTTK mountain hut. You can also walk from Ślemień to Łamana Skała, and from the south from the Kocierz-Basie stop along a special yellow trail.

The road to the hut belongs to the State Forests and has no access for ordinary cars. Off-road vehicles can drive up after notifying the host in advance.

Nearby

The Madohora nature reserve lies close by.

A few kilometres away is the Żywiec Ethnographic Park in Ślemień.

Practical information

  • Location: a southern slope surrounded by forests and meadows, with the nearest permanent neighbour about a kilometre away.
  • Mobile phone coverage is sporadic; according to the hut's website the nearest point with coverage is about 100 metres from the hut.
  • At weekends reservations are welcome, and on weekdays they are essential, because the staff may be working elsewhere on the property.
  • The place requires self-reliance: guests prepare their own meals. Check the details of the stay on the hut's website.
