Church of St Anne in Ustroń

Zabytkowa 15, Ustroń
About Church of St Anne in Ustroń

A wooden church from 1769 in Nierodzim, Ustroń, the oldest church in the town, with a painting of St Anne with Mary and Child from 1704 and a Rococo pulpit.

The Church of St Anne stands in Ustroń, in the Nierodzim estate, on Zabytkowa Street. It is the oldest church in the town and a site on the Wooden Architecture Trail of the Silesian Voivodeship, in the Beskid loop.

A church built in place of a Protestant one

The church was built in 1769 on the initiative of Antoni Goczałkowski, owner of Nierodzim, on the site of a former church built by Protestants. After Catholics took it over in 1654 it was a branch church of the parish church in Skoczów. By 1740 it was in such poor condition that it threatened to collapse and was pulled down. The new church was blessed by the Skoczów parish priest Józef Nepomucen Walder. The missing floor and pews were completed in 1789, when the church came under the patronage of Albert, Duke of Cieszyn. It was recognised as a historic monument as early as 1929.

Wooden log construction

The church is wooden, of log construction, with the chancel facing west and closed on three sides. A sacristy adjoins it on the south and a treasury on the north. The rectangular nave is wider than the chancel, and a common gabled roof runs over both parts. A four-sided tower above the nave with an onion-shaped helm and an octagonal lantern was added in 1938. In 1965-1966 the church was thoroughly renovated and the walls were covered with shingles.

Furnishings from the 18th century

The furnishings are late Baroque, from the 18th and early 19th centuries. In the high altar hangs a painting from 1704 showing St Anne with Mary and the Child. The pulpit is Rococo, from the third quarter of the 18th century, with representations of Faith, Hope and Charity on the canopy. On the wall of the nave there is also a painting of St Christopher. A bell tower with four bells was placed near the church.
