A Modernist church of brick and stone from 1930-1934, with round windows 5.5 m in diameter, an altar by Bogusław Langman and stained glass by Dezydery Mocznay.
The Church of St Anthony of Padua stands in Chorzów on Kopernika Street. It was built in 1930-1934 in the Modernist style and blessed on 9 September 1934.
The main advocate of the construction was the parish priest of the parish of St Hedwig, Fr Jan Gajda. The design was entrusted to the Poznań architect Adam Ballenstedt, who prepared five variants. After construction began in 1930 it turned out that the foundations under the nave had to be dug 10 metres deeper, and under the tower deeper still, because the ground was unstable after earlier clay extraction for a brickworks.
The foundation stone was blessed on 28 June 1931, and in the same year the church got its roof. The first bell, “Magdalenka”, was blessed on 1 July 1932. Fr Józef Knosała became the builder and first parish priest.
The church has a single-space interior on a rectangular plan, and façades of stone and unplastered brick. In the entrance façade and the chancel wall there are circular windows 5.5 metres in diameter, with a crucifix and a cross with the letters Alpha and Omega placed on them from outside, respectively.
The nave body has seven bays and a barrel vault with a crystal pattern. The high altar by Bogusław Langman depicts St Anthony of Padua and the Silesian people, and the stained glass was designed by Dezydery Mocznay.
