Górna, Rybnik
About Church of St Catherine and Our Lady of the Rosary in Rybnik-Wielopole

A wooden church from 1534, moved in 1976 from Gierałtowice to Rybnik-Wielopole, with a late Gothic polychrome ceiling.

The wooden Church of St Catherine and Our Lady of the Rosary stands in the Wielopole district of Rybnik, on Górna Street. It was built in 1534 in Gierałtowice and in 1976 moved to its present site. It is the oldest wooden architectural monument in the Rybnik area and one of the sites of the Wooden Architecture Trail of the Silesian Voivodeship, on the Rybnik loop.

The building

The church was built at the expense of Stanisław Dąbrówka and renovated in 1676. It has a log construction, a chancel closed on three sides and a nave wider than the chancel. The post-construction tower with an overhanging upper storey and a tented helm was added in 1844 by the carpenter Mateusz Pindur of Chudów. It stands on a high, modern foundation. The roofs and canopies, including the sobota (arcade), are covered with shingles. Around the church grow lawns, young larches, Austrian pines and blue spruces.

Polychromes and furnishings

The greatest value is the late Gothic patron-saint polychrome on the boarded ceiling of the nave and chancel, from 1534. It shows motifs with the Piast eagle in a Gothic shield and an image of the patron saint, St Catherine. It was discovered during renovation in 1960-1961.

Of the old furnishings, a Baroque pulpit from the 17th century, a wooden font with a skull held up by an angel, a patron's pew from 1691 and a painting of St Catherine from 1828 by Franciszek Fröml of Fulnek in Moravia have survived. The late Baroque high altar of 1827 was made by the sculptor Izydor Mrowiec of Krzanowice. The 17th-century side altars have paintings of Saints Joachim and Anne and of St Mary Magdalene. The remaining interior furnishings are modern.
