A Baroque church from 1726-1729 in Będzin-Grodziec, extended in 1931-1932, with a brick bell tower.
The Church of St Catherine is an 18th-century Baroque church in Będzin-Grodziec, on ulica Wolności. The brick part was built in 1726-1729, and in 1931-1932 the church was considerably extended. Next to the church stands a free-standing brick bell tower 35 m high.
The parish in Grodziec is mentioned in 1326. The wooden church burned down in 1620 and 1638, and the present brick one was built in 1726-1729. It was consecrated on 29 April 1744 by Bishop Michał Ignacy Kunicki.
In 1931-1932, under the parish priest Stanisław Bilski, the church was enlarged to a design by Henryk Oderfeld. The older part has a brick structure and a single nave, while the new one is a reinforced concrete frame with three naves. The whole is about 25 m wide, 45 m long and 18 m high. Inside, a late Baroque main altar from the early 18th century has survived, along with two side altars, as well as paintings and liturgical furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The church was entered in the heritage register in 1960 (no. 10/60), and in 2020 the chancel was also added to the entry.
From Grodziec it is not far to Będzin Castle and to Grabek Park.
