About Church of St Simon and St Jude Thaddeus in Mokra

A wooden church from 1708 in Mokra, beside which the Battle of Mokra took place in September 1939.

The Church of St Simon and St Jude Thaddeus in Mokra was built as a wooden chapel in 1708. It stands in Kłobuck County and is part of the Wooden Architecture Trail of the Silesian Voivodeship. Today it is a branch church in which services are held only a few times a year.

The chapel and its history

The chapel was funded by Father Ksawery Lisowiecki in thanks for a favourable verdict for the Convent of Canons Regular in Kłobuck. In 1825 the bishop established two indulgence feasts here, in honour of the Holy Trinity and of Saints Simon and Jude Thaddeus. In 1981 a parish was established in Mokra and the chapel became a parish church, and in 2003 a new church in the village was consecrated.

Architecture

The oriented building is of log construction and clad with boards. The nave has a plan close to a square, and the chancel is narrower, closed on three sides. On the roof stands a turret for the sanctus bell. The furnishings come mainly from the second half of the 19th century, and the high altar and pulpit have survived, as has a Crucifixion Group on the rood beam with the inscription “AD 1708”.

Site of a battle

On 1 September 1939, near the church, the Volhynian Cavalry Brigade clashed with the German 4th Panzer Division. The Memorial Room of the Battle of Mokra is dedicated to the memory of this battle.
