Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gliwice-Łabędy

Gliwice
About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gliwice-Łabędy

A 15th-century church extended in the Baroque style, with medieval bells and a wall with chapels.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Łabędy, a district of Gliwice, stands on a small rise. The present church dates from the 15th century, and its present Baroque shape is the result of an extension carried out from 1716 to 1719.

History and architecture

The church is mentioned in 1317, probably still as a wooden one. The extension was initiated by Jan Bernard Welczek, and the blessing took place on 18 September 1719. The stone and brick building is oriented and single-nave. The chancel, closed on three sides, with cross-barrel vaults, probably dates from the 15th century, and the tower from 1716 to 1719 has a Baroque cap with a lantern. The church was renovated in 1864 and 1912 and after 1945.

Furnishings and surroundings

The high altar is Neo-Rococo, from 1858, with sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul. The Baroque altar in the north chapel dates from 1720, and the pulpit from the 16th century has 19th-century paintings of the four Evangelists. On the tower hang two medieval bells from 1479 and 1480. The church is surrounded by a stone wall from the 18th and 19th centuries with two Baroque chapels, and by the gate stands the Welczek tomb from 1830.
