About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Katowice

Parish church from the 1980s on the Paderewski Estate in Katowice, with stained glass by Roman Nyga.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Graniczna Street is a parish church in the Katowice district of Osiedle Paderewskiego-Muchowiec. The present building was built in the 1980s, when the nearby housing estate grew.

History

The first church, adjoining the convent of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mary Immaculate, was consecrated on 1 November 1951. When the Paderewski Estate was extended, it was decided to build a larger church. Permission was obtained in May 1978; the design was prepared by the engineers Stanisław Kwaśniewicz and Mieczysław Molicki, and the interior was designed by Stanisław Kwaśniewicz. The stained glass was designed by Roman Nyga. The new church was consecrated on 26 November 1983 by Bishop Herbert Bednorz, and the old church was demolished in 1984. A parish house with catechetical rooms was built on its site.
