About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wisła

A Neo-Gothic parish church in Wisła built in 1851-1865 and extended from 1970, with large stained-glass windows inside.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wisła is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Wisła deanery of the Diocese of Bielsko-Żywiec. Its brick Neo-Gothic structure was built in the 19th century and extended in the second half of the 20th century.

History of the building

In 1851 the administrator of the chamber in Cieszyn, Rath von Kalkberg, secured the establishment of patronage for the church in Wisła. In the summer of that year construction began on the present brick church, and it was completed in 1865.

The growing number of holidaymakers and tourists forced the parish to extend the church. Work began in June 1970 and the interior decoration was modernised at that time, while the 19th-century Neo-Gothic style was kept.

Interior

Inside, the large stained-glass windows and a painting showing the moment of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stand out.

Nearby

Wisła also has the Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross, and the nearest by distance is the Stanisław Hadyna Amphitheatre (about 0.8 km as the crow flies).

Practical information
