About Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Maximilian Maria Kolbe in Mysłowice

A modernist church on a square plan in Mysłowice-Janów Miejski, built in 1972-1974 to a design by Adam Lisik.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Maximilian Maria Kolbe stands in Mysłowice, in the Janów Miejski district. It belongs to the parish of the same name in the Mysłowice deanery of the Archdiocese of Katowice. It is a modernist church on a square plan, built in the 1970s.

A difficult construction

The land for the church was bought on 10 August 1972. Father Paweł Bednorz was appointed builder, and the design was entrusted to the architect Adam Lisik. Three shapes were considered: a star, a circle and a square. Because of unstable ground and mining damage, the square was chosen as the safest. Construction dragged on because of the unfavourable attitude of the authorities, surveying problems, and difficulties with water, electricity and materials. The money came from the faithful and from the curia.

The main walls were completed at the end of 1973, and in December 1974 Bishop Herbert Bednorz consecrated the church in its shell state.

Interior and furnishings

The church has a volume of 10,000 m³ and an area of 1,050 m². The square plan has sides of 24 m. The church has two chapels. The organ was consecrated on 2 September 1979, and at the end of the 1980s a cycle of stained-glass windows by Werner Lubosz with motifs of the Virgin Mary and St Maximilian was created. In 1994-1995 a bell tower with three bells was added, to a design by Lisik.
