History of the church

A church in Poniszowice was already mentioned in 1175. After being destroyed by a gale in 1399 it was rebuilt in 1404. The present church dates from 1499 and was consecrated on 11 October that year. The belfry was built in 1570, a side chapel was added around 1650, and the patrons' gallery in 1852. The church received the additional dedication to Our Lady of Częstochowa around 1850. Since 2009 renovation and conservation work has been carried out in it, including the reconstruction of the damaged sobotas (skirting galleries).

Construction and furnishings

The church is oriented and built of logs. The chancel is closed on three sides, and the nave has a square plan and is surrounded by enclosed sobotas. The shingle-covered roof is crowned with an octagonal turret for a small bell. Next to it stands a massive, free-standing post-frame belfry with an overhanging upper room. Several historic bells hang in it, and the oldest, "Słowo Pańskie" (the Word of the Lord), dates from 1536.

The furnishings are Baroque and Mannerist. The main altar from 1655 is an Early Baroque work and currently holds a painting of Our Lady of Częstochowa brought from Częstochowa in 1850. Both side altars are also Early Baroque, with paintings of the Resurrection and St Barbara. The organ in the choir loft dates from 1851.

The cemetery around the church

A heraldic cartouche from 1700 and an epitaph from 1724 are built into the cemetery fence. Next to the church stands also a famine cross from 1844 with a bas-relief of Our Lady of Sorrows.
