An Expressionist rotunda church from 1934-1935 in the Nowe Zagrody district of Racibórz, with a dome on 20 reinforced concrete pillars and sculptures by Emil Sutor.
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a rotunda with a large dome, built in 1934-1935 in the Nowe Zagrody district of Racibórz. The design was made by Otto Linder of Stuttgart, and the consecration took place on 20 October 1935.
The church was built through the efforts of Fr Jerzy Schulz. The funds came from collections and offerings of the parishioners of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Racibórz, gathered over several years. The consecration was performed by the Metropolitan of Wrocław, Cardinal Adolf Bertram.
The fighting seriously damaged the church: on 29 March 1945 its vault was damaged, and it was rebuilt in 1947-1948. In 1989-1991 a parish house was built next to the church.
The church has the form of an Expressionist rotunda, and the large dome is supported by 20 reinforced concrete pillars. A square tower was added on the east. The front has three entrance arcades, above which runs a row of narrow windows, and the façade is decorated with sculptures by Emil Sutor.
The semicircular altar is made of black marble, and above it is placed a figure of the crucified Christ. The stained glass from the 1960s was recreated on the basis of pre-war designs. The heritage register describes the style as Modernist and the material as reinforced concrete. The building was entered in the heritage register in 2020.
