Large three-aisled parish church in Zabrze-Rokitnica from 1911-1912, a monument in the register since 2007.
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Zabrze-Rokitnica is a large, three-aisled parish church from the early 20th century, entered in the heritage register in 2007. It was designed by the architect Ernest Kühn.
Construction began in 1911, and the foundation stone was blessed on 15 October of that year. The church was blessed in 1912, and Cardinal Adolf Bertram consecrated it on 28 October 1923. The style of the building is described in different ways: as Neo-Baroque with features of late Eclecticism or, in the heritage register, as Modernist.
The high altar was made in 1913 by Georg Schreiner of spruce wood; in the middle stands a figure of Christ, and relics of St Maurice and St Ursula were placed in the altar table. The side altars are the altar of the Immaculate Conception of Mary of 1925, the work of Mathias Beule, and the altar of St Joseph of 1926 by Franz Schinke. In the chapel of the Scourged Christ, at the back of the church, stand a sculpture by Schinke of 1933 and a painting of 1870. The organ was built by the firm of Paul Berschdorf of Nysa; it was ready in 1928 and has 33 stops and two manuals. Four bells were cast in 1993-1994 in Przemyśl.
Rokitnica lies on the northern edge of Zabrze. The nearest clear points of interest are the Tiele-Winckler Palace in Miechowice and the neighbouring Tiele-Winckler Park, both about four kilometres from the church.
